US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed issues including the global economy and the environment at an unscheduled lunch ahead of the G7 summit in Biarritz, France, on Saturday.
"I think we will accomplish a lot this weekend and I look forward to it," said Trump after announcing that the leaders had "some really great things to talk about" and praising his "special relationship" with Macron.
"We actually have a lot in common, Emmanuel and I, we have been friends for a long time and every once in a while we can go at each other just a little bit, not very much, we get along very well," he stated.
Macron for his part said, "we will discuss as well about the economic global situation, how to decrease tensions and fix the situation in terms of trade and standards because I think if we manage to fix the situation, the seven of us, we fix a great part of the world."
The French president also underlined the importance of talking about "hot topics" including climate and environment on which the EU and the US, he said, have known "divergences ."
The G7 summit is taking place in Biarritz on August 24-26 and gathers the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US, alongside EU counterparts.
