German Chancellor Angela Merkel declared that the talks between the EU and Switzerland on the free movement of people should remain separate from the Brexit talks with the UK, as she gave a presser with Swiss President Johann Schneider-Ammann in Berlin, Wednesday.
"When I try to put myself in the position of a Swiss citizen, then I wouldn't like it at all when I would suddenly be dealt with in a different way just because of the decision of a different country," Merkel said. Amman answered that he still hopes that both parties "will still find a solution this year."
When asked about recent arrests at the Turkish Cumhuriyet newspaper, Merkel declared that it was "alarming that the important freedom of the press and opinion is again and again being restricted." On Monday, at least 13 staff members at the Cumhuriyet newspaper were detained.
