Russian and Turkish high level military officials met in Moscow, Monday, to discuss the conflict in Syria with the focus on Aleppo, as well as the ongoing fight to recapture the Iraqi city of Mosul from militants.
The Russian and Turkish Chiefs of the General Staff, Valeri Gerasimov, and Hulusi Akar, exchanged views on the current situation in northern Syria along the border with Turkey. Gerasimov reportedly emphasised the necessity of separating the al-Nusra Front militants from the so-called moderate opposition.
The US-backed advance on Mosul was also touched on, with Russia concerned it could trigger an influx of militants into Syria. The latest operation to free Iraq's second largest city, Mosul, from the control of the so-called Islamic State (IS' formerly ISIS/ISIL), started on October 17. According to Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, around 3,000-5,000 IS members are estimated to be holed up in Mosul and another 1,500-2,500 in the outskirts.
Earlier in September, Gerasimov visited Turkey and discussed the coordination of joint activities of both countries with General Hulusi Akar.
