North Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs Ri Yong Ho disputed US President Donald Trump's explanation for the Hanoi summit's abrupt collapse, saying that rather than asking for a full removal of sanctions as Trump claimed, they only demanded a partial removal. He made the comments while speaking to the press in Hanoi in the early hours of Friday.
"What we proposed was not the removal of all sanctions, but their partial removal. In detail, there are 11 UN sanction resolutions all together imposed upon the DPRK [Democratic People's Republic of Korea] and we proposed to the United States to lift articles of sanctions that impede the civilian economy and the livelihood of our people from five UN sanction resolutions adopted in 2016 and 2017," Ri Yong Ho said.
"We expressed our intent to make commitments on permanent halts of nuclear testing and long-range rocket launch tests in return form in order to lower the concerns of the United States," the foreign minister continued, adding that "it is difficult to say whether there might be a better agreement than the one based on our proposal at the current stage."
Ri Yong Ho concluded his statement by making clear that North Korea's "stance will remain invariable and our proposal will never be changed even though the United States proposes negotiations again in the future."
