USA: White House urges Turkey to halt advances in Syria

US Deputy National Security Adviser for Strategic Communications, Ben Rhodes, warned Turkey against engaging with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), during the daily press briefing in Washington D.C. on Monday.
Rhodes said that although the US support the Turkish effort to rid Jarablus of so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) fighters, they do not however "support and we would oppose efforts to move south and engage in activities against" the SDF.
Rhodes also insisted that the White House had communicated to the SDF that military action against Turkish forces was unacceptable, stating "we've communicated to the SDF that they should not be engaged in military activity against Turkish forces, and again they have a commitment to retrograde east of the Euphrates River."
Rhodes' warning comes the day after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to continue operations in Syria, and amidst reports that the Free Syrian Army (FDS), backed by Turkish air power, is advancing toward Manbij, the city recently liberated by SDF and the Kurdish People's Protection Unit (YPG) forces from IS.
