France, a trendy pick to win the Women's World Cup final, lost its second group-stage match of the tournament to Colombia on Saturday.
It's the biggest upset in Women's World Cup history, but comes with an ironic silver lining: France's title hopes could actually benefit in the long term.
Colombia, ranked 28th in the world, is the lowest-ranked team to beat a top 10 squad since FIFA began ranking women's teams in 2003.
France is currently ranked third.
Should France finish second in their Group F, they would avoid difficult matches against the Group B winner, tournament favorite Germany, and the winner of Group D during the quarter and semi finals respectively.
Group D of the Women's World Cup is this year's, "Group of Death."
The path of second place in their group, may be more beneficial to their own strength later in the tournament.
