Around 20 far-right protesters gathered outside Berlin Schoenefeld Airport where a train with at least 550 asylum seekers was due to arrive on Saturday morning. The demonstration was organised by the German far-right National Democratic Party (NPD). The protesters held banners reading "Asylum deception makes us poor!" and "No to sheltering refugees! We are against!" A small group of counter-protesters rallied in support of refugee rights and in rejection of the far-right party. The pro-refugee protesters chanted "refugees are welcome here" and held banners reading "solidarity with refugees! Stop racist division!" Dozens of police officers were stationed at the airport to keep the two groups apart and prevent any incidents. According to a Brandenburg Interior Ministry spokeswoman, a train with at least 550 refugees was expected to arrive at Schoenefeld's station on Saturday morning. Instead the train arrived at Lichtenberg railway station. "Because of the planned NPD demonstration, we didn't want to take any risks. All the refugees will be registered and accommodated later in Berlin," she said.
