Protesters rallied outside the Munich Security Conference in Munich on Saturday in condemnation of the EU and NATO's foreign policy in Eastern Europe. Protesters put on an act parodying the so-called pantomime of world powers, focusing particularly on the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s bid to accede into the EU and strengthen ties with the Western military alliance.
The play consisted of several characters playing out scenes between Poroshenko, Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Barack Obama, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. With Porshenko depicted as drinking from a bottle of strong alcohol, the actors endeavoured to hit out at what they see as Ukraine's dangerous NATO membership aspirations, its alleged militarism, and Kiev's attempts to drum up financial support in Europe.
"Ukraine's current government is not up to dialogue but only to war. They always remind us that they have collected more weapons and have mobilised a bigger army during the ceasefire and are ready to continue fighting," said one of the protest organisers Oleg Muzika.
The 52nd Munich Security Conference kicked off at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof in central Munich on Friday. Up to 600 international senior policymakers, including 30 heads of state and government, and 70 foreign and defence ministers are expected to attend. The refugee crisis, the conflict in Syria and the ability of the European Union to guarantee security are expected to top the agenda at this year's conference.
