SOT, reporter (Russian): “What else do you do to keep you warm?
Starkova: “Nothing else, unless auto-suggestion.”
SOT, Kirill Nazimov, stallholder (Russian): “From morning till evening.”
Vendors in the Siberian city of Yakutsk sell frozen, rock-hard fish, meat and berries at a farmers market no matter how cold it gets, as shown by video filmed on Thursday.
The market is believed to be the coldest open-air marketplace in the world. It remains open throughout the Siberian winter when the temperatures regularly fall below -40 Celsius (-40 Fahrenheit).
“I would say I have already got used to it. At the beginning I felt chilly but now it is refreshing. I constantly work, have things to do, run around so I even get sweaty,” vendor Kirill Nazimov said.
Another stallholder, Maria Starkova, said that she feels “warm” since “it is only 30 degrees below zero”.
“Once we even worked when it was 50 degrees below zero. The main thing is to get dressed properly,” she added.
Fish vendor Svetlana Belyaeva said she has worked in the market for 20 years, explaining the customers’ passion for the Stroganina, the local delicacy made of raw, thin, long-sliced frozen fish, make her continue working.
Yakutsk is known as the coldest city in the world. The average high temperature in the capital of the Sakha Republic in December is -34 Celsius (-29.2 Fahrenheit).
