Serbia: Seselj holds defiant press conference following Hague acquittal

31.03.2016
The leader of the Serbian Radical Party (SRS) Vojislav Seselj held a press conference at the party's headquarters in Zemun, Belgrade on Thursday, following his acquittal from charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
Seselj was declared 'not guilty' of all charges after the ICTY prosecutors said they had failed to find a causal link between Seselj's alleged "hate speech" in the early 90s and subsequent ethnic violence in Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia.
Seselj stated that his acquittal "has largely contributed to removing the stigma from the Serbian nation in terms of charges of joint criminal enterprise, blame for the outbreak of the Civil War, responsibility for crimes which occurred in the war, and so on." Despite this, Seselj added that his attitude towards The Hague Tribunal, "as an anti-Serbian court, and as a tool of the 'New World Order,' has not changed one bit."
The leader of SRS concluded with the ironic remark that he should have received at least a mild sentence "so as not to enrage Serbian enemies, outside of Serbia, as well as in Serbia" before adding that with or without him "the idea of a Greater Serbia is equally strong" and "immortal."
