Nick Clegg Offered To Resign Prior to Election Year

Nick Clegg offered to resign as Liberal Democrat leader a year before the 2015 election.
The Guardian reported that Clegg considered his position in the wake of the party’s humiliating reverses in the European and local elections in May 2014.
Lord Ashdown described the episode as the “darkest of the dark nights of the soul” for the party leader, who was “distraught about everything”.
Clegg made numerous phone calls to discuss his position well before the general election that saw his party’s seats reduced from 56 seats to eight.
They told him to stay in post and fight to defend the cause of liberalism at the general election. Clegg finally resigned on May 8, the day after the election.
