Luxembourg: EU discuss imposing arms embargo on Turkey

SOT, Stef Blok, Dutch Foreign Minister: "The Netherlands has condemned Turkey's invasion and announced that we stopped weapon deliveries to Turkey. And, well, I hope the colleagues today will agree on a very clear European signal."
SOT, Edgars Rinkevics, Latvian Foreign Affairs Minister: "Well I do believe that we need to discuss a proper response by the European Union. And I think that first of all the EU should be united, because if we are not united we are failing on everything. Second, I do believe that the possibility of arms embargo should be on the table and I also do believe that this is something that we need to discuss very seriously. Are we going to achieve that? This is another question, because it's always not easy to find agreement immediately among 28 member states. But I would be in favour of some strong message. And if we can agree on some kind of actions then I would definitely also support the common united position of the European Union."
SOT, Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy: "We are mainly discussing the military operations in Syria. To me the most important point today will be the fact that we will be hosting the UN Special Envoy for Syria, [Geir] Pedersen. We'll discuss with him how we can help protecting the political process from this new military escalation. And obviously as you know member states will discuss how far they are ready to go on some measures that are on the table when it comes to the Turkish military activities in Syria."
SOT, Alexander Schallenberg, Austrian Foreign Affairs Minister (German): "On the one hand a military action is simply wrong and undermines security and stability throughout the region, and also brings into question arms exports. I believe if there was a clear signal from NATO states to a NATO partner Turkey, to make a point, like we the decision we made in Austria back in 2016, 2017."

EU foreign ministers discussed the prospect of imposing an arms embargo on Turkey over its military incursion into northern Syria, as they took questions outside a summit in Luxembourg on Monday.
"Military action is simply wrong and undermines security and stability throughout the region," stated Austrian Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Schallenberg.
The EU's top diplomat Federica Mogherini said, "member states will discuss how far they are ready to go on some measures that are on the table when it comes to the Turkish military activities in Syria."
Several countries, including Germany and France, have already suspended arms exports to Turkey.
Ankara's military offensive dubbed 'Operation Peace Spring' began on October 9 with the alleged aim of creating a 'safe zone' in north-eastern Syria cleared of Kurdish forces. The offensive sparked protests in several countries and has drawn widespread criticism from EU member states.
