Kurds celebrated in Erbil on the evening of a historical independence referendum on Monday, as polls closed across three Iraqi Kurdistan provinces.
The celebrations included traditional Kurdish music and dancing, and many pro-independence voters waved the Flag of Kurdistan. Fireworks were set off in the streets of the Iraqi-Kurdistan capital.
There was a high voter turnout of an estimated 72 percent, despite international pressure placed on President of the Iraqi Kurdistan region Masoud Barzani to call the referendum off.
