Russia: Plague of locusts descends on Stavropol

The sky darkened as the largest attack of locusts in the last three decades hit the Stavropol region, Thursday. A video recorded by a local man shows thousands of locusts that travel up to 40kmph (25mph) appearing as a dark cloud and then shows the insects destroying crops and foliage in a field. Each locust eats its own body weight worth of food in a day and can reach 7-8cm (2.7-3.1inch) in length with a wing span of up to 12cm (4.7inch). A state of emergency has been declared to the regions of Orenburg and Astrakhan as well as the Republics of Bashkortostan and Chechnya.
