The foreign ministers of Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Iran held a meeting in Astana, Wednesday, to discuss the legal status of the Caspian Sea.
The foreign ministers of the so-called Caspian Five are set to discuss several areas of cooperation as well as regional and international matters relating to the Caspian Sea.
The question of defining the sea's legal status became a pressing one with the emergence of independent Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan after the fall of the Soviet Union.
Those countries have raised the issue of demarcation while some difficulties remain over determining whether it should be recognised as a lake or a sea.
