Vice-president of the Russian office of the International Human Rights Committee (IHRC) Ivan Melnikov stated that alleged Russian foreign agent Maria Butina pleaded guilty because of prison conditions, while speaking in Moscow on Thursday.
"The place where Maria [is] right now, it's [a] jail in Alexandria and she can only go for a walk from 2 to 4 AM. This is, I think, [is] sleep deprivation," added Melnikov.
The 29-year-old Russian graduate student entered the US in August 2016 on a student visa. She was arrested on July 15 for conspiring against the US government and failing to register as a foreign agent.
Earlier on Thursday Butina pleaded guilty to a charges of taking part in conspiracy to violate US foreign agent laws.
