14.10.2016
A beauty pageant for women with disabilities, dubbed 'Miss Independence 2016', was held in Moscow on Thursday. Elena Simakina, the pageant's youngest participant, was voted the winner of the contest.
The competition saw nine women, aged 20-40, in wheelchairs, competing for several titles, including: winner, two runner-up, audience's choice, Miss Grace and Miss Style.
The show-off contest, which is considered the main part of the pageant, consisted of three parts: two choreographed performances and a personal presentation, which the contenders prepared by themselves. In preparation for the pageant and over the course of two months, the women were assisted in their preparations by professional choreographers and stylists.
The first beauty pageant for women with disabilities was held in 2012. Over the past four years there have been six contests, with more than 60 participants.
