27.04.2017
German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed the case for a 'complete rethink' of the EU's border security system during a keynote speech, Wednesday, at the German Bundestag building in Berlin.
Merkel said that the EU was considering a common border patrol policy, focusing on the development of an entry register.
"The question is whether we want to make this freedom of movement of our citizens last, or a subtle change that yet again takes place over a national border control, which of course might have a serious economic impact. But to accept this Schengen-zone as a space that also defines the external boundaries, means to completely rethink [them]."
Security improvements and advancements were at the top of the agenda during the congress, with a focus on how to reduce the risks of future cyber and terror attacks.
