Former head of the Catalan Mossos d'esquadra regional police Josep Lluis Trapero arrived at the National Court in San Fernando de Henares, east of Madrid, on Monday, to attend a hearing over his alleged role in the 2017 failed Catalan independence bid.
The prosecution accuses the ex-police chief of sedition and rebellion during the attempted secession by Catalonia, which Madrid views as illegal. Prosecutors say the Catalan police under Trapero displayed "total passivity" during voting in the outlawed independence referendum.
If the allegations are confirmed by the jury, Trapero could face 11 years in jail. Catalonian Vice-President Oriol Junqueras and eight other Catalan politicians are serving jail sentences over similar accusations.
