Thousands took to the streets of Sao Paulo on Sunday, demanding freedom for former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Demonstrators marched through the city waving flags and signs reading: "Free Lula", with some holding masks with Lula's face as well as his giant cardboard cutout.
"These movements are asking for a fair trial for Lula. We found the process so unfair, a biased process which was part of Operation Car Wash," said Josue, a coordinator of the Homeless Workers' Movement (MTST).
Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who served as Brazil's president from 2003 to 2010, began serving his 12-year prison term in 2018 for accepting bribes as part of Operation Car Wash, one of the largest corruption scandals in Latin American history.
