The leading suspect in last November's Paris attacks, Salah Abdeslam, remained silent throughout his questioning by French investigators at the Palais de Justice in Paris on Friday, confirmed his lawyer Frank Berton following the session.
Commenting on the first questioning the suspect received since his extradition from Brussels last month, Berton said "The hearing is over. Mr Abdeslam chose not to speak today, to use his right to remain silent", adding that he didn’t want to "answer the judges questions" today.
Speaking on Abdeslam's behalf, Berton said that the suspect is particularly "disturbed" by the 24/7 CCTV surveillance in his cell, adding that this is a "major issue" for the suspect. "He doesn't understand. He thinks he's being treated in a different way" said Berton.
Abdeslam, 26, was captured by security forces after his fingerprints were allegedly traced to a Brussels flat in March. The 26-year-old was on the run from authorities following his alleged involvement in last year's Paris attacks. At least 130 people were killed and more than 349 left injured, after gunmen carried out a series of coordinated attacks at six different locations across the French capital on November 13.
