Baghdad's Green Zone partially re-opened to the public after 12 years, Sunday, with the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi walking across the streets to welcome the passing drivers. The 10km (4 miles), heavily-secured square still has some streets that require special permissions. The re-opening was a bid to improve transport in the capital, helping civilians to move more easily around the city. The Green Zone hosts the parliament, the presidential mansion, the country's top courts, the US Embassy and other governmental buildings. The area became known as Green Zone after the US invasion in 2003, when access to the public was strictly forbidden.
