Russian infectious disease specialists held a meeting in Salekhard, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, on Tuesday, concerning the measures taken to suppress the anthrax outbreak in the region.
Head independent expert of Russia’s Ministry of Health on infectious diseases Irina Shestakova stated that all activities were being carried out with “an absolutely full understanding … what to do and how to stop it.”
So far 90 people including 50 children have been evacuated to the regional capital's Salekhard District Hospital as a precaution.
Russian authorities first became aware of the outbreak following the death of 1,500 reindeer in late July. Anthrax is a potentially deadly bacteria that is usually transmitted to humans from animal matter, with the last such anthrax outbreak in Siberia taking place 75 years ago in 1941.
