USA: Shots fired outside US Capitol by man committing suicide

A man reportedly shot himself outside the US Capitol in Washington DC on Saturday, triggering a lockdown of the Capitol and the buildings surrounding it for several hours. There was a large police and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) presence while the situation was dealt with. The man allegedly had a backpack on him and a sign reading "social justice" when he committed suicide at about 13.00 local time (17.00 GMT). The lockdown was then lifted in the afternoon, after the details of the incident had been clarified. Congress is currently on a two-week long break, returning to regular sessions on Monday, April 13.
