California Regulators Approve Unprecedented Water Cutbacks

06.05.2015
Officials in California hope that new regulations will make residents finally realize that the state has a serious water shortage.
The State Water Resources Control Board approved rules that force cities to limit watering on public property. The new rules also encourage homeowners to let their lawns die and impose mandatory water-savings targets for the hundreds of local agencies and cities that supply water to California customers.
Governor.Jerry Brown had pushed for the stricter regulations. He says that voluntary conservation efforts have not resulted in the water savings needed to affect a four year drought.
The governor ordered water agencies to cut urban water use by 25 percent compared with 2013. That's the year before he declared a drought emergency.
