A far-right rally held in Berlin on Friday on the 80th anniversary of the Kristallnacht pogrom got overrun by counter-protesters chanting anti-Nazi slogans at the participants.
The far-right movement 'We are for Germany' (WfD) held a candle-held vigil march to commemorate what they say are "victims of German politics" despite efforts by Berlin's senate to ban it.
Thousands of counter-protesters swarmed the streets and voiced their outrage to some 100 right-wing protesters. Heavy police presence was deployed to prevent the counter-protesters from breaking the march.
Around 30,000 Jewish males were sent to concentration camps and over 500 were murdered on Kristallnacht, which translates as the "the night of the Broken Glass." A state-sponsored anti-Jewish pogrom instigated by the Nazis on 9-10 November 1938. During 'Kristallnacht' thousands of Jewish-owned shops, synagogues and houses were smashed up.
