Thousands of people gathered at a rally in the Moldovan capital Chisinau on Sunday to demand criminal prosecution for those responsible for the disappearance of $1.5 billion (€1.35 billion) from three Moldovan banks in November 2014. They also called for the resignation of the prosecutor general and the head of the National Anticorruption Centre in connection with the missing funds. Protesters waved European Union and Moldovan flags in front of a cordon of police officers who were deployed to secure the area. No incidents of violence or arrests were reported. The activists set August 27 as a deadline for the government to fulfil their demands, otherwise they promise to continue their protests at Cathedral Square.
