US President Barack Obama stated that the US's intentions were to preserve close economic and financial ties with both the EU and the departing UK, to ensure "economic growth and financial stability" in the aftermath of the Brexit vote. Obama was speaking at the 2016 Global Entrepreneurship Summit in the Silicon Valley, Friday.
The US leader revealed that he spoke to British Prime Minister David Cameron following the result of the Brexit referendum, saying "we agreed that our economic and financial teams will remain in close contact as we stay focused on ensuring economic growth and financial stability."
Obama also revealed that he spoke with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, stating that "the United States and our European allies will work closely together in the weeks and months ahead," adding that "while the UK's relationship with the EU will change, one thing that will not change is the special relationship that exists between our two nations. That will endure. The EU will remain one of our indispensable partners."
"Our NATO alliance will remain a cornerstone of global security and in a few weeks we will be meeting in Warsaw for the NATO summit. And our shared values, including our commitment to democracy and pluralism, and opportunity for all people in a globalised world. That will continue to unite all of us," concluded Obama.
On Friday morning the Electoral Commission reported that the Leave campaign had clinched a win, with some 52 percent of the electorate voting for Brexit from an estimated 72 percent voter turnout.
