Suriname Votes in General Election

People in the South American nation of Suriname are voting in a general election. All 51 seats in the National Assembly are up being chosen. Former military ruler Desi Bouterse, who has been convicted of drug trafficking in the Netherlands, said on Saturday he was confident he would be re-elected to another five-year term. His National Democratic Party will need 26 seats to govern alone and a two-thirds majority of 34 seats to re-elect Bouterse without entering into a coalition.
