The US-led coalition have killed dozens of civilians who were taking part in a funeral procession, according to the Russian Ministry of Defence, in the city of Daquq, some 30km (18.5 miles) south of Kirkuk, footage from Sunday shows.
The Russian MoD, through General Igor Konashenkov, stated that the coalition jets understood the mourning procession to be militants from the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).
"Judging by the eyewitness accounts, the mourning procession was mistaken for terrorists by the coalition aviation. Dozens of Iraqi civilians died, including women and children," Konashenkov said.
"Russian reconnaissance pinpointed two jets conducting airstrikes on Daquq, located 30 kilometers to the south of Kirkuk, where, according to our data, there are no ISIS fighters," he added.
The attack comes a week after Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced the start of the military operation to liberate the country's second largest city, Mosul. IS captured Mosul in 2014 and the offensive is now spearheaded by the Iraqi army and Kurdish militia, supported by the coalition led by the United States.
