Friends, family and fans bid farewell to the famous Russian pop singer and actress Zhanna Friske just outside of Krasnogorsk on Wednesday, after the star lost her year-long battle with brain cancer on Tuesday. Large queues formed outside Crocus City Hall for the public memorial service ahead of Friske’s funeral, many waiting from early in the morning. Among those who came to say goodbye to the singer were her show-business colleagues, including singers Dmitri Malikov and Igor Nikolaev. Friske, aged 40, was diagnosed with cancer in January 2014 and struggled against the disease for more than a year, often travelling abroad for treatment. Outside of Russia, the singer was best known for her role in the sci-fi blockbuster Night Watch. Having launched her career in 1996, she was well known in her native country, achieving a series of hits with songs such as 'Portofino.' She left behind her one-year-old son and civil partner, the well-known TV presenter Dmitri Shepelev.
