Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the prisoner swap involving the exchange of Ukrainian pilot Nadezhda Savchenko for two Russian fighters was done for "humanitarian reasons", Wednesday, speaking in Moscow to the relatives of Anton Voloshin and Igor Kornelyuk, two journalists who were killed when Savchenko directed shell fire onto their position in 2014.
Putin told Anton's sister Mariana Voloshina, and Igor's wife Ekaterina Kornelyuk that "you applied to me with a request to release Savchenko". He said "I would just like to thank you for your position and express hope that these decisions were made for humanitarian reasons and will lead to a reduction in the conflict".
The Russian president expressed his hope that the exchange "will help to avoid such a terrible and needless loss of life".
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree pardoning Savchenko earlier in the day. In exchange, two Russian citizens who were detained in Ukraine last year and sentenced to 14 years in prison on terrorism charges have been released.
Savchenko had been sentenced to 22 years in prison after being convicted of the murder of Russian journalists Igor Kornelyuk and Anton Voloshin in Ukraine's Lugansk Region, and of illegally crossing the Russian border. She is accused of relaying the coordinates of a checkpoint where the two Russian journalists were subsequently killed by Ukrainian artillery in June 2014. She denies all charges.
