Several thousand demonstrators gathered outside South Carolina's state legislature building in Columbia, Saturday, demanding that the Confederate flag flown from the site be taken down in light of the Charleston church massacre. The protesters, brought together under the banner of 'Take It Down,' waved placards and listened to speeches decrying the use of the Civil War flag which has become synonymous with racism in the American south. The flag has long caused outrage in the US because of its use by the confederation of secessionist American states existing from 1861 to 1865 that were in support of slavery. Their attempted secession led to the American Civil War. The flag has since been popularly used as a symbol of White southern pride, invoked by the Ku Klux Klan, and many modern White power groups. The debate over whether the flag should be flown in Columbia comes after the Charleston church massacre, where twenty-one-year-old suspect Dylann Roof reportedly sat for one hour at a Bible study class at the Emanuel AME Church, before shooting nine churchgoers on Wednesday evening.
