The European Union believes Britain has too many house-making mothers and must do more to get them into the work force.
EU figures show that British women are twice as likely to remain at home caring for their children and elderly relatives than their European neighbors.
According to a report from the European Council, the large number of part-time or unemployed mothers is a social challenge the British government must address.
The report noted how unemployment had fallen dramatically in Britain in recent years, suggesting the reluctance of British mothers to work is a conscious decision.
Their remedy suggests more state-funded child care.
The recommendations came as part of a routine assessment of every European economy.
