UK Prime Minister Theresa May announced that a vote on her Brexit withdrawal agreement would take place in the second week of January 2019, in a statement delivered to the House of Commons on Monday.
"I can confirm today that the we intend to return to the meaningful vote debate in the week commencing the 7th of January and hold the vote the following week," May stated.
She also claimed that her efforts to secure further reassurances on the Irish backstop arrangements at the EU Council meeting in Brussels on Thursday were successful.
May added that "there is no plot to keep us in the backstop" and went on to quote a statement from French President Emmanuel Macron saying that "the backstop is not our objective, it is not a durable solution and nobody is trying to lock the UK into the backstop."
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn attacked the prime minister's claims of making progress in Brussels, saying that "she achieved nothing" and added that "she has not made any progress at all."
May survived a vote of no confidence brought by members of her own party on Wednesday, with 200 members of the parliamentary Conservative Party supporting her and 117 voting against, leaving her with a majority of 83.
