Vandals damaged an inflatable dam in California causing Nearly 50 Million gallons of water to pour out.
Police said they caused “irreversible damage” to the inflatable dam in Fremont, a city in the San Francisco Bay Area. Meant for thirsty residents, the water instead flowed into San Francisco bay.
The Alameda County water district said the lost water could have supplied 500 homes for an entire year.
The water district's general manager Robert Shaver said the loss especially stings because of California's drought conditions, adding that the vandalism was senseless, destructive and wasteful.
The water agency said it would cost $3 million to replace the dam, but said it did not expect that the damage would have a long-term impact on the water supply for Fremont, Newark and Union City.
