Hundreds of people marched at New York City's Foley Park on Wednesday to demand justice for Eric Garner, a black man who died after an officer put him in a chokehold in 2014.
The "We are Eric Garner" rally, held on the fifth anniversary of Garner's death, saw protesters call for Mayor Bill de Blasio and the New York Police Department to fire all officers involved in Garner's death.
The rally came one day after the Department of Justice decided not to press civil rights charges against NYPD officer David Pantaleo, who put Garner in a chokehold.
Protesters marched to the NYPD headquarters, while chanting "Stop killing black people" and holding a banner reading "Eric Garner had a right to life."
"I am the parent of four black children and my worst nightmare would be for one of my kids to have a hashtag on the Internet," one protester said. "And so I want to add my voice so that this doesn't happen to any of my children or any other black or brown person again."
Garner died July 17, 2014 after Pantaleo put him in a chokehold as multiple NYPD officers tried to detain him on charges of selling loose cigarettes. A grand jury decided not to indict Pantaleo in December 2014. Mobile phone footage of the incident showed Garner, who was asthmatic, complaining repeatedly "I can't breathe."
