Istanbul police department detained two smugglers who were reportedly attempting to sell a priceless 2000-year-old Aphrodite statue and 12 ancient artefacts in Istanbul, Tuesday.
The police officers got in touch with the suspects, identified as A.S. and Y.Z., who requested €312,297 ($345,280) for the items, which they allegedly obtained from illegal excavations. In their possession, the group had the statue, nine bottles, wine cups and a piece of glass. The experts, who evaluated the Aphrodite statue agreed that the piece is 'priceless'.
During the operation, the suspects were arrested at the meeting with the 'buyers' and taken into the custody. The artefacts were transferred to one of Istanbul's archaeology museums.
