Thousands of French workers protested in the centre of Paris, Thursday, in condemnation of the prison sentences given to eight former Goodyear workers accused of the illegal detention of two executives from the company. A one-day strike has also seen public transport in several regions of the French capital.
The workers from the main French trade union the CGT "boss-napped" the executives in 2014 after threats were made to close their factory. A judge on January 12th sentenced the eight workers to 24 months, nine of those in prison, and the rest on probation.
"There aren't just eight Goodyear workers convicted, you all here today are convicted, condemned to protest," said Mickael Wamen, spokesperson for the jailed workers, to the assembled crowd. "For you, for your children, for today, for tomorrow. We cannot let this government win," he concluded.
