Leipzig University transformed its sports hall into a temporary refugee shelter Friday in response to the growing numbers of migrants and refugees without housing in the area. Saxony has received 10,500 new asylum seekers in the first half of 2015 compared to 3,800 in the same period of 2014. At a press conference on Friday officials were unable to say how long the facilities would be used for housing and whether a long term sustainable alternative is being considered. The emergency measures are the first of their kind and have been implemented hastily since the decision taken to use the space on Wednesday, just days before the arrival of 500 asylum seekers on Saturday. The sports hall access doors and corridors have been boarded off and student foot traffic re-routed while a new fence around the building is intended to separate the students and refugees. Those people staying at the temporary accommodation are reportedly free to come and go within and around Leipzig.
