The construction of a 1,800 km (1,119 mile) long highway has started in Magadan, Far East Russia, Tuesday expected to be completed at a rate of one metre (3.3 feet) a day. The road is to connect the Magadan Region and Chukotka Peninsula, and it is estimated that it will take up to 30 years to be completed with a budget of more than 150 billion rubles (2.7 billion euros) allocated for the project. The high expenses and long time frame are being put down to the harsh weather conditions and environment, as the drilling crew has to be on site 24 hours a day, fighting with low temperatures, permafrost, and tundra conditions.
