An Olympic sailing competition kicked off in Guanabara Bay, Monday, despite the controversy related to its contamination.
After long queues to access the facilities, locals and tourists watched the competition without entering the water through fear of getting sick.
Athlete Natalia Penha, who watched the sailing competition from ashore said: "Everybody says it's contaminated so I decided not to enter the water because they say if you enter the water something may happen and I can't afford to get sick and jeopardise my team."
The Marina da Gloria has been reportedly cleaned; however, debris can still be seen accumulating in other spots of the Guanabara Bay. It is claimed that the Bay's currents are carrying sewage from the surrounding favelas which could create serious problems for the athletes.
