Supporters of Catalan independence tried to storm the regional parliament building in Barcelona on the National Day of Catalonia this Wednesday.
Around a thousand protesters gathered outside the gates to the building to demand that the governing coalition of separatist parties proclaim a "Catalan republic".
The spontaneous demonstration saw a tense stand off between Mossos d'Esquadra, the regional police force, and protesters covering their faces. A barricade of security perimeter fences was built and symbols of Spanish nationalism burnt.
Security forces were charged with securing the building and preventing an occupation, as happened last year.
Catalonia's national day, the Diada, marks the fall of Barcelona in the War of the Spanish Succession in 1714 and the region's subsequent loss of institutions and freedoms.
