Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov commented on current negotiations regarding the Syrian peace talks taking place in Geneva, speaking following a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah in Muskat, Wednesday.
Describing his thoughts on a prospective ceasefire, Lavrov stated that Russia’s thoughts on the issue were “pragmatic, and are dictated by the practical need to stop the fighting.” Discussing the ceasefire’s implementation with US counterparts, he said that “more detailed conversations can be continued before the meeting on the international Syrian Support Group, which will be held on February, 11 in Munich.”
Speaking on the current Geneva talks, Lavrov hit out at Turkey and Saudi Arabia for their conduct over the makeup of the Syrian opposition in the Geneva peace talks. The Russian diplomat stated "If you mean the opposition group, which arrived to Geneva from the so-called Riyhad list, I suppose that some of the members of that group are too spoiled by their sponsors. First of all, by our Turkish neighbours which alone blocked the participation in the meeting of important and affluent powers such as the Kurdish Democratic Union ‘PYD’ party from Syria."
Lavrov came to Oman to discuss security issues in the Middle East and sign the agreement on lifting visa requirements for holders of diplomatic, special and service passports. One of the main topics of the discussion with partners was conference in Geneva, devoted to negotiations between Syrian government and opposition. Another important issue is establishing fair prices for oil and “exchanging evaluations”.
