Congress Debated Cutting Amtrak's Funding by 18% Hours Before Train Crash

Lawmakers were, on Wednesday, debating a motion to cut Amtrak’s funding by 18% – just hours after, Northeast Regional Train 188 derailed in Philadelphia killing six people.
The House Appropriations Committee is debating a bill that would cut passenger railway investment by more than $250m from the $1.4bn invested last year despite Amtrak warning that without increased investment, the nation’s crumbling rail infrastructure would be “vulnerable to a bigger, costlier and far more damaging failure than anything yet seen”.
