Around 100 Spanish nationalists gathered on Plaza de Espana in Barcelona on Monday to protest against Catalan independence movement and to demand Spanish unity on the Spain's national day. The protest was organised by the far-right 'La Falange' party, the only legal political party during the fascist dictatorship of General Francisco Franco, and the far-right Democracia Nacional (National Democracy). Protesters called on the Spanish government to ban pro-independence Catalonian parties. The group waved the flags of General Franco and chanted slogans branding the secessionists "terrorists." At the end of the march, a group of protesters burnt several the Catalan flags. Following the Catalan local elections in September, in which pro-independence parties gained a majority in the region's parliament, La Falange held a protest in Madrid demanding that the army intervene should Catalonia attempt to declare independence. The Dia de la Hispanidad (Hispanic Day) is celebrated every year on October 12 to commemorate Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas in 1492.
