Clashes erupted between May Day protesters and riot police in Istanbul, Friday, after demonstrators from Turkey's Communist Party attempted to reach the iconic Taksim Square despite the government’s announcement that the area was closed off for May Day demonstrations. A massive police presence, estimated to include around 10,000 officers, attempted to stop crowds reaching the square by using metal barriers. However, once protesters broke through bearing communist flags and banners. Police and demonstrators clashed, leading to many arrests. Several May Day marches took place in Istanbul and other major Turkish cities on Friday. A larger march on the central square was organised by The May Day Organizing Committee, made up of the Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions (DİSK), the Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions (KESK), the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB) and the Turkish Medical Association (TTB). The group declined to give information about the marches' meeting points before May Day in order to avoid police.
