NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on Russia to play a "constructive role" in the fight against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), during a press conference in Brussels, Thursday. He also called on Russia to discontinue its support for the government of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad. Discussing the Russian intervention in Syria, Stoltenberg said that there is "strong increased military presence of Russia in Syria," including "airstrikes," "strikes from cruise missiles" as well as "incursions into Turkish airspace." The NATO secretary general accused the Russians of "not mainly targeting ISIS, but they are targeting other opposition groups and they are supporting the regime." Defence ministers of all 28 member states of the North Atlantic Council (NAC) gathered for a meeting in Brussels on Thursday which Stoltenberg is to head. The fight against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) and Russia's air strikes in Syria will be high on the agenda.
