Sukhoi Su-34 fighter jets lifted off from Latakia, Thursday, to take part in Russia's military operation against the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL). Over 50 warplanes and helicopters are currently deployed at Russia's air base in Latakia. Among the models are the Sukhoi Su-34, a strike fighter designed for the supersonic penetration of enemy airspace at treetop level, the Su-24, a tactical bomber that can hit ground targets from low altitudes, and the Ilyushin Il-76, designed for carrying heavy cargo. Russia announced that it had conducted its first airstrikes in Syria on Wednesday, successfully hitting IS targets. On Thursday, more attacks hit militant targets in Maarrat al-Nu'man and al-Latamna. Prior to the strikes Russia's Federation Council gave its consent for the use of the Russian armed forces abroad at a closed-doors meeting. The consent does not include the use of ground forces. The move followed Russian President Vladimir Putin's UN General Assembly speech in which he called for an alliance against IS.
