I always believed that it is good that we give tangible new things to people – motorways, railways, theatres, renovated schools and blocks and others. We gave subsidies for agriculture, fought against contraband reaching 3.8 billions more taxes, reaching good result against cigarrette contraband with 8 % - a good level between other EU members. But there is something we are underestimating, something that people are telling us.”
Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov announced that he would be handing in his resignation during a speech in Sofia, Sunday, after his party's nominee lost out in the runoff presidential elections to socialist-backed opposition candidate Rumen Radev.
“On the first working day of parliament, I’ll deposit my resignation to this government. Some would say we are pushing the country into political instability, it’s not true. This election result showed that we have a new majority in parliament,” said Bokyo.
Borrisov continued, “I always believed that it is good that we give tangible new things to people – motorways, railways, theatres, renovated schools and blocks and others… But there is something we are underestimating, something that people are telling us.”
Former Bulgarian Air Force Commander Radev, an independent candidate was nominated by the Bulgarian Socialist Party, beating the ruling-party GERB’s candidate Tsetska Tsacheva. Radev was elected on a ticket to limit immigration and improve economic ties with Russia, calling for EU sanctions be withdrawn against Moscow.
Borissov's resignation is expected to spur early parliamentry elections in Bulgaria.
